I don’t understand Jona’s motive, he wanted to keep his friendship with Jack? But allowed Jack to talk to his spouse that way, didn’t even have her back, yeah she’s annoying but, that’s his wife. If he knew how tense things are between Jack and her why would he feed her information that he knew would cause a huge issue.

As a non-native English speaker, I would like to know your genuine opinions: would Jack’s phrase about muzzling a woman be considered that shocking in a more usual setting, outside of the reality show setting? To me, it did seem rude and inappropriate, but not really “outrageously unacceptable”, so I wonder if it’s a language or attitude (cultural) thing.

Judging by your and other poster’s reactions, it’s pretty clear that for English speakers that statement was indeed a very serious matter. So it’s good that I asked, because where I come from, statements of a similar nature (if literally translated) would be perceived very differently depending on the context – sometimes I guess the reaction would be similar to yours, sometimes it would be just laughed off, probably in a circle of male friends or something like that.

Well that’s the thing, when I literally translate that question asked by Jack to my own language, it doesn’t feel as offensive as it clearly does to you. Sorta like certain curse words – they often mean the same thing, but in different languages have a varying degree of intensity.

I agree. Different language within different regions of the world are extremely different and sometimes difficult to navigate. In the USA the term ” gas lit ” is hardly ever heard yet down under issued almost in every sentence……. other terms considered “curse words here” are commonly and openly used there. However referring to a women as a animal that should be muzzelled is offensive anyplace in the world whether she needs to be told to settle down or not. He could have definitely chose his words more wisely in any language or culture
